Maharaja Nripendra Narayan remembered
COOCH BEHAR, Nov. 9: The 125-th anniversary of coronation of Maharaja Nripendra Narayan was observed in Cooch Behar yesterday. Association for Better Cooch Behar organised the programme in association with Cooch Behar Sanskritik Sanstha in front of the district court building on the northern bank of Sagardighi. A brief cultural programme was held on the occasion.
Maharaja Nripendra Narayan is considered the founder of modern Cooch Behar. During his regime the erstwhile princely state of Cooch Behar had stepped into the new era. All out development was initiated during his rule.
Representatives from different organisations and senior citizens attended the programme yesterday. Mrs Sabita Roy, Mr Ananda Jyoti Majumder, Mr Prasenjit Barman, Mr Shibendra Nath Roy, Mr Amiya Bakshi, Mr Tapan Choudhury, Mr Debabrata Chaki and others paid floral homage to the statue of the Maharaja.
During their address on the occasion the speakers resented over lack of care of the statue of the Maharaja and the garden inside which it is situated in front of the district court building. They demanded the administration to take adequate measures to keep the statue with full honour. Proper illumination and beautification of the garden was also demanded. []
