ABTA CONFERENCE

2-day ABTA conference begins in Cooch Behar

 

COOCH BEHAR, Nov. 7: The two-day conference of the Cooch Behar district unit of the All Bengal Teachers' Association (ABTA) began at Rabindra Bhavan today. General secretary of the ABTA Mr Shibaprasad Mukhopadhyay inaugurated the conference. Prior to the delegate session a large colourful procession passed through the streets in the town.

 

Cooch Behar district unit president of the ABTA, Mr Samarendra Nath Saha and Mr Ranjit Roy presided over the conference. Among the speakers there was the sabhadhipati of Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad, Mr Dilip Biswas. Mr Bakul Dutta tabled the secretarial report.

 

In his inaugural address Mr Shibaprasad Mukhopadhyay came down heavily on the Congress run Central government for the ongoing economic crisis in the country.

 

In the secretarial report a three-phase charter of demands was tabled at the conference for discussion. Among the demands 15 were aimed to the Central government, 26 to the state government and 5 to the district inspector of schools.

 

In the conference resolutions were adopted demanding establishing of a regional office of School Service Commission for Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling districts and creation of new posts of teachers and non-teaching staffs for the sake of improvement of education scenario. Appointment of fulltime teachers in the schools instead of contractual or part-time teachers, setting up of an engineering college in Cooch Behar, appointment of a computer teacher in each school, fixation of pay scale for librarians according to their qualifications and introduction of democratic system in Higher Secondary Education Council and Madrasa Education Board have also been demanded by the delegates.
