Agitation at Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya

 

COOCH BEHAR, May 7: The members of the University Teachers' Council (UTC) demonstrated at the premises of the Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) at Pundibari, Cooch Behar on Wednesday noon demanding removal of the interim vice-chancellor of the UBKV. Mentionworthy, the UBKV teachers have been conducting 'cease work' for the last few days at the university.

 

The secretary of the UTC, Dr Ashok Choudhury said they organised the demonstration in front of the university's gate today demanding removal of the interim VC Dr Sankar Kumar Laha. Fifty-six teachers participated in the demonstration. He alleged that the interim VC was not appointed properly following all norms. After grabbing the chair on 27 March he issued many controversial orders. These orders should be cancelled, he demanded. He declared that the UTC would continue its agitation till the demands are met.

 

On the otherhand, Dr Laha said there was no VC in the university for a long after ending of the term of the previous VC. In the meantime a few persons worked as acting VCs and had issued several orders beyond their capacity. "I made those orders null and void only by issuing fresh orders" he clarified. He said he requested the agitating teachers to lift the cease work stir in the interest of the students. He hoped that a permanent VC may join soon in the university and that might draw an end to the crisis the university is suffering from. []
