CPM-FB : 'Almost unity' achieved at fourth round of talks

COOCH BEHAR, April 11: The CPI-M and the Forward Bloc have attained an almost unity at the fourth round of bilateral talks held at district CPI-M office on Friday afternoon.

After the bipartite meeting the secretary of district CPI-M, Mr Chandi Pal and the general secretary of district Forward Bloc Mr Udayan Guha jointly met the media persons. Mr Pal declared that they achieved unity at twenty-seven Zilla Parishad seats out of twenty-nine seats. More discussion will be held on 14 April for the remaining two unsettled seats of Chandamari and Bhetaguri.

The leadership of both the parties will decide the sharing of seats of Gram Panchayat and Panchayat Samity tiers at local level. Mr Pal also said that they decided to contest unitedly at the panchayat elections and submit nomination papers for ZP seats unitedly on 17 April.

District Forward Bloc general secretary Mr Udayan Guha said they are 'almost happy' over the development. In the twenty-seven ZP seats the Forward will contest in nine seats and the CPI-M in eighteen seats. No party will field ghost candidates against the other party's candidates. From now on there will exist no factor against unity of the two parties, he hoped.

On the otherhand, Forward Bloc's state secretariat member and also the Cooch Behar (West) MLA Mr Akshoy Thakur opined that no visible development was attained today. The situation is still at the similar state as it was in the previous three bipartite meetings. "This is never be called an unity", he observed. The aggrieved FB leader abstained from attending today's meet because "mere talks can never yield results". Total unity of the CPI-M and the FB is not possible at all if the CPI-M continues denying the legitimate rights of the Forward Bloc, he declared. []
