Trinamul's roadblock

COOCH BEHAR, April 10: Trinamul Congress supporters associated with SUCI supporters staged a one-hour roadblock against price hike of essential commodities at Kachhari Morh in Cooch Behar today. Md Abdul Jalil Ahmed, Mr Shibendra Nath Roy and other leaders attended the programme. []

 

Opening of Torsa bridge demanded

 

COOCH BEHAR, April 10: Pundibari Torsa Setu Nirman Sangram Samity demanded early completion of construction and opening of the much-awaited Torsa road-bridge along Falakata-Pundibari road. They also urged the authorities to name the bridge after the great hero of Cooch Behar royal dynasty – Chilarai.

 

On behalf of the PTSNSS Mr Debabrata Chaki said the initiative was taken in 1984 to construct the much-needed bridge. The work for the proposed 700-metre long concrete bridge was started in 1991. Construction work was suspended in 2001 for different problems. In 2003 the PTSNSS was formed to put pressure on the authorities to resume work. Ex-MP Mr DP Roy (now the Jalpaiguri MLA) took the initiative and in 2005 construction work was resumed.

 

Mr Chaki said a sum of Rs 61.70-crore was allocated till now for construction of the bridge. Once opened it will be of immense help for improving the road communication system in north Bengal as well as in the entire northeast region. []

 

North Bengal bodybuilders selected to go USA

 

COOCH BEHAR, April 10: Two bodybuilders of north Bengal Mr Krishna Kanta Sarkar (Cooch Behar), Mr Biswajit Biswas (Siliguri) and coach Mr Bhabesh Roy were selected to participate in the Mr Universe Bodybuilding Championship to be held at Miami, Florida, USA on 19-21 June.

 

Mr Bhabesh Roy, who is also the general secretary of North Bengal Bodybuilding Association, said the general secretary of Indian Bodybuilding Federation, Mr Suresh Kadam intimated them that as Government of India is unable to provide financial aid they need assistance form all to attend the championship. []
