GREATER COOCHBEHAR

GCDP to field Bangshi in Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat

COOCH BEHAR, Feb. 9: After its annual executive meeting that held last night, the Greater Cooch Behar Democratic Party (GCDP) announced today that they will field three candidates in the ensuing Lok Sabha election.

The GCDP named Mr Bangshi Badan Barman in Cooch Behar seat while the candidates for the Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri seats will be named later. It may be mentioned here that Mr Barman is now in Cooch Behar District Correctional Home as an undertrial prisoner in connection with a few cases brought against him and several others. If the legal procedure was not complete before the poll the senior leader of 'Greater Cooch Behar' movement will submit his nomination from the jail, GCDP president Mr Ashutosh Barma said.

Mr Barma said in last night's meeting it was decided that they would raise demands to the government to take actions against infiltrators and illegal voters. "We shall submit memorandums within seven days to the President, the Prime Minister and the Election Commission of India to delete the names of the false voters from the voters' list and steps against the infiltrators. We shall request them to constitute a board to review the existing voters' lists for deletion of the names of ghost and illegal voters", he said. If no action was taken they are to start a fast-unto-death programme prior to the Lok Sabha election, the GCDP leader announced.

In the meeting the 128-member central committee was reduced to a 25-member one to run the organisation effectively, Mr Barma said.
