Students demonstrate demanding arrest of magician
COOCH BEHAR, Dec. 22: The students of Chhat Guriahati Sevabhavan Shikshaytan High School took out a protest-rally in the town today. They also demonstrated in front of the office of the superintendent of police demanding arrest of renowned magician PC Sorcar (Jr) who allegedly manhandled a teacher of their school last evening during a magic show.
Headmaster of the school, Mr Sujal Acharya alleged that a few teachers and students went to the evening show of PC Sorcar (Jr)'s magic last evening at Rabindra Bhavan. The magic show have been going on there for the past few days. During the show of a particular item the magician called some of audience to check the blindfold tied on his eyes. A teacher of the school, Mr Ganesh Mandal came up on the stage and started examining the blindfold. At that time the magician pushed down him forcefully alleging the man was trying to make him blind. Soon after, an associate of the magician also manhandled the teacher. Taking him outside of the stage he was again beaten mercilessly. The show came to a halt for about one hour and the magician too reportedly prayed mercy for his act. At last, the show resumed.
The teacher lodged a complaint at Kotowali police station last night. An associate of Mr Sorcar, Sanjib Roy was arrested on the same night and he was bailed out.
Today, the students and teachers took out procession demanding arrest and punishment of the magician. Students like Ms Suparna Sarkar and Mr Pankaj Das said they would continue their movement till arrest of the magician. The headmaster however said that they were not demanding end of the shows but the authorities should take action against the offenders. They submitted a memorandum to the DSP (HQ) Mr SK Das.
When asked, Mr Das said an investigation was initiated and legal steps will be taken after completion of the probe. The magician was not available for making any comment. The future of his shows at Rabindra Bhavan is also turned uncertain. Meanwhile, a police officer opined that the incident was not an intended one. When examining the teacher may have pressed a little on the eyes and the magician may have pushed him following reflex action.
