KAMTAPUR

KLO militant arrested

COOCH BEHAR, Sept. 10: Police arrested one Ramanath Roy (25), stated to be a Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) activist, from Baxirhat near Assam-Bengal border on Tuesday night. Today, he was produced in Tufanganj court and remanded to police custody for eight days.

Police said Roy was nabbed last night when he was found roaming suspiciously at Laukuthi village under Baxirhat police station. One country-made pistol, three-round ammunition and some documents were seized from his possession. During interrogation he confessed to the police that he was a resident of Chhoto Goma of Kokrajhar in Assam. As a participant of ninth batch of KLO trainees he recently underwent militant training at Chittagong in Bangladesh that concluded in March of this year, he told the police.

DIG (Jalpaiguri range) Md Julfikar Hossain, Cooch Behar SP Mr DP Singh and other senior police officials questioned Roy today. Questioning is still going on to learn more from him about the KLO's organisation and whereabouts of its activists, police said.

It was learnt that the police were aware of the KLOs recent reorganisation move in this region. After the Operation Flush Out in Bhutan Hills the KLO had turned into a disordered organisation. This time they are trying to recruit activists mostly from Assam instead of Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri, a senior police official said. []
