MATHABHANGA (Cooch Behar), July 6: Acting on a tip-off Cooch Behar Kotowali Police arrested one hardcore activist of the outlawed Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) from Chandamari Bazar in Cooch Behar on Saturday night. As he was wanted in connection with several cases pending in Mathabhanga, he was handed over to Mathabhanga Police and was sent to the ACJM court there today with a prayer to get him in remand for fourteen days for further interrogation.
The superintendent of police, Cooch Behar, Mr Anil Kumar said the arrested man, Ranjan Barman alias Ranjan Roy alias Anoar Hossain alias Ratan had undergone training in the second batch of KLO militants at the underground training camp in Bhutan Hills. He was known mostly as Anoar Hossain. He was wanted in connection with some cases in Mathabhanga including a shoot out incident in a video parlour at Beltapara of Hazrahat in 2004 and a seditious meeting in Mathabhanga in 2003 from where the police had seized some objectionable documents.
Acting on a tip-off police nabbed Ranjan Barman who was found loitering suspiciously in the market area last night. However, at time of his arrest no arms or documents were recovered from his possession, the SP said.
Mr Kumar said, recently they got information that Ranjan Barman was in Bangladesh where he was engaged as the bodyguard of KLO chief, Jeeban Singh. Now, it is suspected that he came from Bangladesh crossing the border, but after his arrest he claimed that he torn off his connections with the KLO where he was recruited by distracting him with false promises.
After taking the man in remand the police will interrogate him thoroughly to find out the whereabouts of other KLO militants and their hideouts, the SP said. Noted KLO militants like Dhananjay Barman and Bachchu Roy are still fugitive. They are also wanted in connection with some specific cases.
Replying a question, Mr Kumar said that a few months ago they received information that the KLO was trying to recruit new ones and reorganise themselves in this region especially in Assam with active co-operation of ULFA. Since then Cooch Behar Police is maintaining regular contacts with its counterpart in Assam and a number of raids were also conducted in Assam, the SP said. []
