COOCH BEHAR, April 3: Prior to the three-tier panchayat elections, the newly formed alliance of Trinamul Congress, SUCI, PDS and Janabadi Forward Bloc started joined movement in Cooch Behar. Today they submitted a memorandum containing a 32-point charter of demands to the district magistrate. On 10 April they will observe a one-hour roadblock programme in the district.
In a joint press conference organised at the SUCI office in Cooch Behar, the leaders of Cooch Behar district units of Trinamul Congress, SUCI and Janabadi Forward Bloc announced that they would organise joint movements on popular issues like price hike of essential commodities, corruption in rationing system, power cut, NBSTC, exchange of enclaves between Bangladesh and India, etc.
President of Cooch Behar district unit of Trinamul Congress Mr Rabindra Nath Ghosh said the campaign strategy for the panchayat elections would be chalked out after discussion among the alliance partners. Adjustment of seats among the members of the alliance will be made in all the villages according to the organisational strength of the parties in the areas concerned.
Referring the rollback of the decision of the Forward Bloc in the state level from its 'go it alone' policy Mr Ghosh said they may extend support to the Forward Bloc in Cooch Behar district if they want to fight against the CPI-M in the rural polls.
Differing Mr Ghosh's stand, the secretary of Janabadi Forward Bloc's Cooch Behar district unit Mr Saumen Das (ex-MLA) said the Forward Bloc was always an ally of the CPI-M as a Left Front partner. They used to take different stand as an opportunistic move in Cooch Behar district before the panchayat elections. "We should not extend support to the Forward Bloc or the RSP at lower levels if they remain in the Left Front at the state level," Mr Das opined. "We must help them if they leave the LF", he added.
District SUCI secretary Mr Sisir Sarkar said, the joint movement plan of their alliance was adopted at a meeting of the four parties held on 30 March. []
