Dinhata : Inquiry to start next week

 

COOCH BEHAR, Feb. 9: A senior magistrate will be entrusted to conduct the administrative inquiry into the police firing that was occurred on 5 February at Dinhata. Generally a deputy magistrate conducts such inquiry but in this particular case a senior magistrate will do the job as the government is considering it a serious one.

 

When asked, the district magistrate of Cooch Behar Mr Rajesh Kumar Sinha said the inquiry is expected to start in the next week. The name of the senior magistrate who will conduct the inquiry will be finalised after consultation with the higher authorities, he said.

 

Administrative sources said here that among the 57 FIR named, 40 were arrested earlier. They were arrested in connection with the massive violence that claimed six lives on 5 February. Arrest of the remaining ones including seven leaders and the injured persons now in hospitals, depends on the police, as they are the agency to do the job. When asked, the Cooch Behar SP Mr Anil Kumar said the arrested forty persons are now under 14-day judicial custody. When they were produced at the court they were not asked for police remand.

 

Meanwhile, the DSP (Crime) Mr Meghlal Sarkar was transferred as the PA to the IGP (North Bengal) in Siliguri and the Dinhata IC Mr Sudhanshu Roy as the DIB inspector in Cooch Behar, The SP confirmed. These two officials were on duty at Dinhata on 5 February. []
