LEFT FRONT

Left Front demonstration against police inaction

COOCH BEHAR, March 1: The supporters of the constituent parties of the Left Front staged demonstrations at different police stations in Cooch Behar district today demanding police action against Trinamul Congress leaders and activists who are engaged in disturbing peace in this district. Memorandums were also submitted to the officials of the police stations concerned.

District Left Front convenor Mr Chandi Pal said they organised today's programme against police for its 'inactive role' in dealing complaints lodged against Trinamul Congress leaders and activists.

During the demonstrations the Left Front supporters protested the partisan attitude of the police. They alleged that the Trinamul Congress activists have been practicing violent activities like attacks on leaders and party offices of Left Front partners, but the accused are still roaming freely. There are several cases pending against district Trinamul president Mr Rabindra Nath Ghosh but he is still maintaining close relations with a section of police officials, Mr Pal alleged.

Heavy police arrangements were made at different police stations apprehending trouble but the demonstration programme passed off peacefully.

Ridiculing today's LF programme, the vice-president of district Trinamul Congress Mr Niranjan Dutta said there were many criminal cases pending against bigwig CPI-M leaders. The police should arrest them first before taking action against Trinamul activists related with fabricated cases, Mr Dutta opined. The Left Front's programme was nothing but a bid to woo people's sympathy just before the Parliamentary elections, he observed.
