GREATER COOCHBEHAR

GCDP to fight in Lok Sabha poll

COOCH BEHAR, Feb. 8: The Greater Cooch Behar Democratic Party (GCDP) may field three candidates in the ensuing Lok Sabha election. They may field Mr Bangshi Badan Barman in Cooch Behar seat while the candidates for the Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri seats are yet to be decided. The final decision is to be adopted at the GCDP central committee meeting that starts this night.

In the meeting a few executive members might be replaced while the central committee may be expanded too, GCDP president Mr Ashutosh Barma said. Programmes for organising fresh movements to get a separate state will be adopted at the meeting, he said. All the decisions including fielding of candidates in the Lok Sabha election will be announced tomorrow at a public meeting that is to be held at Samhati Maidan in Dinhata, Mr Barma said.

This morning, Mr Barma inaugurated the two-day celebration of the great hero of Cooch Behar Royal dynasty, Chila Roy's 499-th birth anniversary by hoisting the GCDP flag at Samhati Maidan in Dinhata. Competitive performances of Bhawaiya song and Kushan dance are also being held. The annual meeting and gathering of the GCDP are being held on the occasion, Mr Barma said.
