MAOIST ACTIVIST

Trained Maoist activist in police net

COOCH BEHAR, Jan. 30: One Ratan Roy, stated to be a hardcore Maoist activist, was arrested from Mansai under Baxirhat police station in Cooch Behar yesterday. He is known in different areas in different take-names like Sahidul, Prakash and Bangtu. Some documents seized from his possession but there was no arms with him. Today, the man was produced in Tufanganj court and remanded to police custody for 14 days.

Cooch Behar SP Mr Devendra Prakash Singh said Ratan Roy had undergone arms training in East Singbhum of Jhargram in 2006-2007. Examining the seized documents it is suspected that he is associated with Maoist activities in different areas of West Bengal and Jhargram. Earlier, he had been arrested in Alipurduar in 2005 in connection with a case. Incidentally, he is a resident of Alipurduar sub-division of Jalpaiguri.

The SP said they were being informed in recent times that Maoists were trying to spread their activities in this region. Yesterday, after arrest, the man too divulged a few names of his associates during questioning. Acting on a tip-off the police arrested him but it is yet to be ascertained why he came to Baxirhat. His organisation may have engaged him to gear up Maoist activity in this region, Mr Singh said.
