Minister questions standard of school education

COOCH BEHAR, Jan. 13: The standard of school education is going downward in this state. None but a minister of the Left Front cabinet almost admitted it in Cooch Behar today.

State food and supply minister Mr Paresh Chandra Adhikari laid the foundation of the building for the Higher Secondary unit at Sadar Government High School in Cooch Behar today. He has to lay the foundation because state school education minister Mr Partha Dey failed to appear at the scheduled programme.

During his address, Mr Adhikari said the government schools in this state are suffering from lack of teachers. As there are many vacant posts in the government schools the standard of education is going down, he felt. Questions are rising from different quarters about the standard of education. A large number of posts are lying vacant for a long and so the students are suffering. Earlier, the situation was bad in other government-aided schools. After appointment of new teachers the situation was improved in those schools. But, the situation in the government schools is not good enough till now, he said.

On the otherhand, the deputy director of state school education Mr Sanat Ghosh claimed that the education scenario of this state is not that gloomy and the standard of education is improving. Due to some technical reasons there are many vacant posts in the government schools because the appointment is done through Public Service Commission examination, he tried to explain.

Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad sabhadhipati Mr Dilip Biswas and assistant-teacher-in-charge of Sadar Government High School Mr Prabir Acharya spoke on the occasion. []
