DINHATA FIRING INCIDENT

Udayan Guha prefers to attend hearing in Kolkata

COOCH BEHAR, Jan. 12: On the second day of the sitting of the Justice Narayan C Sil Commission of Inquiry it was decided that the hearing into the Dinhata Police Firing incident will be held on 14, 15 and 16 February at the hearing room of the Commission in the Annexe Building of the Circuit House in Cooch Behar. Forward Bloc leader Mr Udayan Guha told the Commission today that he wants to appear for hearing in Kolkata, Mr Justice Sil said. "We have to find out how this could be happened", he said.

Today, district Forward Bloc secretary Mr Udayan Guha appeared before the Commission. Discussions were made over procedure of functioning of the Commission.

Mr Udayan Guha said he today pointed out to the chairman of the Commission that the bullet marks on the walls at the vicinity of the firing incident should be preserved for examination. Mr Justice Sil agreed to it, he said.

Mr Guha said, "The Forward Bloc's pre-announced law violation programme of 5 February 2008 was a statewide one. In Dinhata, CRPF were also deployed at the SDO office complex. After the firing incident we collected three kinds of bullets for the spot. Paramilitary forces generally use these. I told the chairman of the Commission to call experts to examine these bullets to ascertain what kind of firearms were used on that day."

"As there is an FIR lodged against me, I like to appear before the Commission in Kolkata because I like to take legal help from my lawyer Mr Sekhar Basu there," the FB leader said. "During my testimony I may produce the collected bullets, pictures and other documents related to the incident. I will also submit the copies of the circulated leaflets containing the demands for which we had organised the law violation programme to prove that our programme was a scheduled one and no prepared police force was deployed on that day to contain a huge crowd," Mr Guha added.
