Five accused get life imprisonment

COOCH BEHAR, Dec. 22: Additional sessions judge of first fast track court, Cooch Behar, Mr Prasun Kumar Bhattacharjee sentenced five men to life imprisonment for murdering a man in 2002.

 

According to the public prosecutor of the case, Mr Chanchal Kumar Chakraborty, a few persons had called out one Babun Dey (27) from his residence in Vivekananda Street on the night of 24 October 2002 and shot at him. He was shifted from MJN Hospital in Cooch Behar to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri where he died on 28 October 2002.

 

A case was initiated against five persons – Jagadish Choudhury alias Bula, Niranjan Sarkar alias Anath, Chanchal Chakraborty alias Bura, Parthasarathi Ghosh alias Biswajit and Jitendra Roy alias Jitu. 16 witnesses including the wife of the deceased, Mrs Sarita Ojha (Dey) were examined in the court during the legal procedure. Considering all aspects the judge convicted the five accused under Section 302/34 IPC on Saturday.

 

Today, the judge sentenced the five convicted to life imprisonment and slapped fine of Rs 5,000 on each of them. In default they will have to suffer an additional rigorous imprisonment for one year, Mr Chakraborty said []
