GCDP to gherao SP office on Monday

COOCH BEHAR, Dec. 2: Aggrieved activists of the Greater Cooch Behar Democratic Party (GCDP) will gherao the office of the superintendent of police in Cooch Behar on Monday.

GCDP president Mr Ashutosh Barma alleged that a team of police raided his residence at Kesharibari in Sitai this morning. They searched the rooms in the house. He was not present at that time. His wife was also out of the house. When she returned she challenged the police personnel for searching the house in absence of any adult member of the family. Before leaving the place the police team handed over a piece of paper to the school-goer son of Mr Barma. They understood nothing from the scribble written on the paper, Mr Barma said.

When asked over phone the Cooch Behar SP Mr Devendra Prakash Singh said he was on leave upto 9 December. Additional SP Mr Ashesh Biswas said the police went to the residence of the GCDP president to execute a warrant but he failed to throw any light about the specific complaints against the GCDP leader.

Condemning the act of the police, the GCDP secretary Mr Phanindra Nath Barman said they would stage a gherao at the office of the superintendent of police on Monday. As the GCDP is engaged in movements demanding a separate state and recognition of their mother-tongue the police are trying to harass the leaders, he alleged. []
