Maharani Sunity Devi remembered

 

COOCH BEHAR, Nov. 10: The 76-th death anniversary of Maharani Sunity Devi was remembered in Cooch Behar today. The Heritage Society of Cooch Behar (HSCB) organised a brief programme at Sunity Academy premises. On behalf of HSCB Mr Dipak Brahma, Mr Dipendra Chanda and Mr Nirmalendu Chakraborty and the teacher-in-charge of Sunity Academy Ms Banashri Dasgupta paid floral respect to the statue of Maharani.

 

It may be recalled that the Brahma Samaj had divided following the marriage of the then ruler of Cooch Behar State, Maharaja Nripendra Narayan with the frontrunner of Brahma sect, Kesab Chandra Sen's daughter, Sunity Devi on 6 March 1878. During the regime of Maharaja Nripendra Narayan, Maharani Sunity Devi had took a leading role in spreading of education among the women and many educational institutions including Sunity Academy were established in different areas in Cooch Behar. []
