Legal awareness campaign goes on

 

COOCH BEHAR, Nov. 10: World Mental Health Day was observed at Cooch Behar District Court premises today. The programme was a part of the observance of National Legal Awareness Week that began in Cooch Behar yesterday. The observation of the week will be concluded on 16 November.

 

In today's sensitisation programme the legal facilities, rights and other benefits offered to the mentally retarded persons were discussed. District Judge of Cooch Behar Mr KYS Manhas was the chief speaker. A few other judges also spoke on different aspects of legal rights of the mentally retarded persons.

 

The inaugural programme of National Legal Awareness Week was organised inside Cooch Behar District Correctional Home (CDCH) with the undertrial inmates yesterday. Principal magistrate cum secretary of the District legal Services Authority Mr Manas Sanyal explained the basic concept of observance of the week. District Judge Mr KYS Manhas and three Additional District Judges – Mr DP Mallik, Md Amzad Hossain and Mr PK Bandyopadhyay spoke on the occasion. In the interactive session the judges answered a number of questions related to topics like human rights violation, legal facilities for undertrials, prevention of illegal detention and role of Legal Services Authority.

 

It was learnt that on the concluding day of the National Legal Awareness Week (16 November) a sensitisation programme would be held with the judges and the magistrates engaged in Cooch Behar district. Another programme will be held on that day for the physically challenged persons to aware all concerned about the legal rights of the physically challenged people. []
