62 candidates to contest for nine seats

The picture is now clear. Sixty-two persons are to contest from nine Assembly segments in Cooch Behar district. Mr Dhirendra Nath Das of the NCP has withdrawn his nomination on Monday.

Among the candidates four are of the CPI-M and five are of the Forward Bloc The Trinamul Congress has fielded six candidates, the Congress two candidates and the Nationalist Congress Party has fielded one candidate. Among the small parties there are PDCI, SUCI and Amra Bangalee. Eleven candidates from such small parties are to contest at different segments. There are twenty purely independent candidates also in the fray.

Among the independent candidates one is the outgoing Congress MLA from Sitai Dr Fazle Haque who is contesting from Dinhata. His main rival is Forward Bloc's Mr Udayan Guha. An eminent Trinamul Congress leader Mr Sunil Roy is contesting at Mekhliganj against a Congress candidate Mr Jayanta Roy and a Left Front minister Mr Paresh Adhikary.   

Official sources said the number of voters in Cooch Behar district is 17,89,056. The number of male voters is 9,43,834 and the number of female voters is 8,45,222. Jawans of Central forces are to be deployed at the polling booths.

Cooch Behar DM Ms Smaraki Mahapatra said adequate arrangements would be taken to make the polling process free, fair and peaceful.
