Gujarat won Cooch Behar Trophy

COOCH BEHAR, Jan. 5: The four-day final cricket match of Under-19 School Cricket Championships for 2008-09 played at the Cooch Behar Stadium adjacent to Cooch Behar Palace from Friday between Gujarat and Jharkhand teams concluded today. Gujarat team won the Cooch Behar Trophy for the first time defeating their rival Jharkhand team by an innings and 59 runs.

 

Final scores in brief : Gujarat – 348 (Chirag Gandhi 114, Rahil Shah 52 – Bowling : Kundan Sing 4 for 131) ; Jharkhand – 191 (S Tiwary 76, Rahil Shah 6 for 83) and 98 (MS Khalsi 23, Jesal Karia 6 for 12).

 

Cooch Behar Trophy was introduced in 1945-46 under supervision of the BCCI. At the beginning the then Maharaja of Cooch Behar, Jagaddipendra Narayan donated a trophy for the tournament which was known as 'Cooch Behar Trophy' with inscription in front side 'Presented by His Highness Maharaja Bhup Bahadur of Cooch Behar' and on the back 'Maharaja Jitendra Narayan Challenge Cup – All India Schools Tournament'. Maharaja Jitendra Narayan was the father of Maharaja Jagaddipendra Narayan, the donor of the Trophy. Maharaja Jagaddipendra Narayan himself was a good cricketer and captained the Bengal Ranji team for many years and was runners up captain in 1943-44 Ranji Trophy final played in Bombay.
