10-year RI to rapist

COOCH BEHAR, Nov. 30: Additional district and sessions judge, Cooch Behar, Mr Bidyut Kumar Roy sentenced one Rajiv Banik alias Sadhu to ten years rigorous imprisonment for committing rape on a minor girl.

 

It was learnt that posing as a Tantrik cum exorcist, Banik, a resident of Pundibari, came to the house of the 14-year-old girl at Baro-rangros village and assured the family members of making her ailing father normal. On the night of 15 May 2006 he stayed in that house and convinced all about performing rituals under Tantra system and the need for a minor girl for the same. On that night he committed rape on her. On the next day a complaint had been lodged at Kotowali police station. Fifteen witnesses were examined in the court during the legal procedure.

 

Yesterday, the additional district and sessions judge, Cooch Behar, Mr Bidyut Kumar Roy sentenced the man under Section 376 IPC. The convicted man will have to suffer 10-year rigorous imprisonment (RI). He will have to suffer an additional RI for one year if he fails to submit Rs 5,000 that was imposed as fine on him. []

COOCH BEHAR, Nov. 30: A political convention of the Trinamul Congress was held at Gosanimari High School premises in Dinhata today. District Trinamul Congress president Mr Rabi Ghosh, vice-president Mr Niranjan Dutta, Dinhata-I block unit president Mr Subal Roy and others spoke on the occasion. The speakers demanded construction of the much-awaited bridge at Adabari-ghat and supply of fertilisers and seeds against fair price to the farmers. []
