Elephant dies at Hamiltonganj

 

COOCH BEHAR, July 3: Body of a wild elephant was found on the bank of Buri Basra river at Hamiltonganj under Buxa Tiger Reserve (West) yesterday. The place is very close to the India-Bhutan border.

 

BTR (West) sources said a herd of elephants were crossing the river on Tuesday night when a ten-year-old tusker drowned. The incident occurred due to a sudden flash flood. The elephant fell down in the river water and drowned when the sandbank of the river eroded, a senior BTR (West) official suspects.

 

Soon after getting the information a team of forest officials rushed to the spot. After completion of post-mortem of the dead elephant it was cremated. []
