Forest minister inaugurates Forest Week

 

COOCH BEHAR, July 14: By planting saplings on the south bank of Sagardighi in Cooch Behar the state forest minister Mr Ananta Roy inaugurated celebration of Forest Week on Monday. The newly appointed sabhadhipati of Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad Mr Dilip Biswas too planted saplings on the occasion.

 

Forest department sources said that an ambitious plan was adopted to bring back the greenery beside the streets in Cooch Behar district as it was in the days of Maharajas. Under this plan 25,000 saplings of different kinds of trees will be planted throughout the district. In Cooch Behar town, which is considered a heritage town, they will plant 5,000 saplings beside the roads. A fund to the tune of Rs 25-lakh was allocated for the purpose, forest officials said.

 

Forest minister Mr Ananta Roy said the volume of forestland in this state is 16 percent but it is merely two percent only in Cooch Behar district. "We should bring back the greenery of past days to keep the environment clean in the greater interest of the people of Cooch Behar ", he said. []
