CoochBehar News

Celebration ends

COOCH BEHAR, July 2: The two-day celebration of the 126th birth anniversary of the first chief minister of West Bengal, Bharat Ratna Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, concluded at Shahid Baag today. Cooch Behar Municipality organised the programme.

Fruits distribution among the children patients at MJN Hospital, free medical check up camp, eye examination camp, blood donation camp, assistance to the physically challenged people, colourful procession of school students, sit-and-draw competition, essay writing competition, seminars, felicitation to the successful students of Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations and cultural programmes were organised during the two-day birth anniversary observation.

Claiming the programme as a successful one, the chairman of Cooch Behar Municipality, Mr Biren Kundu said that they paid tribute to the maker of West Bengal through the two-day programme. []

CPM's sour experience in civic polls

COOCH BEHAR, July 2: The Congress was able to retain power in the Haldibari Municipality by capturing seven out of eleven seats. The CPI-M bagged three seats and an independent candidate (stated to be ghost candidate of the CPI-M) got the remaining one seat.

In Mekhliganj the Forward Bloc retaliated the CPI-M by snatching out five seats. The remaining four seats were won by independent candidates (stated to be allies of the Forward Bloc). The CPI-M had to go back from here empty handed.

It may be recalled here that the Forward Bloc and the CPI-M had entered into an agreement at Mekhliganj in the previous civic poll that they will share the chairmanship of the board for two-and-half years each. But, later, the chairman (CPI-M) of the board denied handing over the charge to the Forward Bloc.

Following that development, this time the local Forward Bloc leaders and activists expressed their opposition to any Left Front consensus over seat sharing. But, observing the negative attitude of voters to the CPI-M in the recent panchayat election result the CPI-M had wooed the district FB leadership for an adjustment. It was decided that the Forward Bloc would enjoy the chairmanship even if they get a single seat in Mekhliganj. Now, as the Forward Bloc swept away all the seats, the so-called Left Front unity became a theoretical one at Mekhliganj. []
