Citu strike cripples steel units

DURGAPUR, July 2: Production at secondary iron and steel units across the Asansol-Durgapur and Barjora industrial belts in south Bengal suffered a huge loss following a Citu-sponsored strike today. According to the secondary iron & steel unit owners' association, the units recorded a collective loss worth Rs 400 crore in the Burdwan district units. About 100 secondary steel units operate in Burdwan.
The Citu, meanwhile, has threatened to go for an indefinite strike in these units from 18 July if the factory owners continue to remain indifferent to the workers' demands. SNS
