Mukul Roy visits Tufanganj and Pundibari

COOCH BEHAR, June 13: A member of Rajya Sabha and general secretary of All India Trinamul Congress Mr Mukul Roy visited the trouble torn Nakkatigachh in Tufanganj on Friday morning. He went to the residence of Debabrata Pramanik who was killed on Wednesday night during the massive violence that broke out in that area between CPI-M and Trinamul Congress supporters on that night.

Yesterday afternoon, Mr Roy visited Pundibari and attended the burial ceremony of Safiar Rahman who allegedly died on Wednesday night following an attack made by CPI-M activists on last Sunday.

The Trinamul leader said no clash occurred at Nakkatigachh on Wednesday night. It was simply a pre-planned attack on Trinamul supporters. Usually, members of both sides receive injury during a clash but in this case the Trinamul supporters were the sole victims. Debabrata was killed and two other Trinamul supporters received bullet injury.

Blaming the CPI-M for the massive violence Mr Roy alleged that the firearms of the security men of local CPI-M leaders were used and the police are trying to cover it up. Mr Roy said he would submit a detailed report of the happenings of Nakkatigachh to Miss Mamata Bannerjee. "I will talk with the chief secretary, the home secretary, and the DGP over the matter", the MP said.

Mr Roy declared that the Cooch Behar district unit of the Trinamul Congress would organise a 'SP office gherao' programme very soon demanding immediate punitive measures against the offenders.

The Trinamul leader said that when he visited the deceased Debabrata's house this morning, locals complained to him that they were not able to cast votes freely in the recent panchayat elections as CPI-M musclemen had coerced them not to exercise their democratic right. "We cannot allow this to go on for ever", he said. []

Bandh in Cooch Behar

COOCH BEHAR, June 13: The Trinamul Congress sponsored 12-hour bandh in Cooch Behar-II block is gong on peacefully since morning today. The bandh was called in protest against the death of a Trinamul supporter. According to the Cooch Behar DM Mr Rajesh Kumar Sinha the situation is peaceful.

District Trinamul Congress vice-president Mr Niranjan Dutta said armed CPI-M men had roughly assaulted Safiar Rahman on Sunday at his Pundibari residence. The man died at a private hospital in Cooch Behar on Wednesday night. To stage protest against the CPI-M's brutal act a bandh was called in Cooch Behar-II block today, Mr Dutta said.

On the otherhand, educational institutions in Cooch Behar district were found closed today. The SFI called the strike against killing of Debabrata Pramanik who was killed on Wednesday night. Debabrata was a student of Tufanganj College and SFI claimed him as a leader of their organisation. Trinamul Congress too claimed him as a leader of Trinamul Chhatra Parishad. []
