EXPLOSION

Blast at Barobisa claimed one life

COOCH BEHAR, May 12: One person was killed and three injured when a bomb exploded at Barobisa under Kumargramduar police station in Jalpaiguri district at around 10-30 a.m. today. The place of occurrence is close to the Assam-Bengal state border.

It was learnt that the bomb was on a bicycle that was placed adjacent to the Barobisa MVI Check Post. The sound of explosion spread a panic wave in the locality. Locals and policemen rushed to the spot and recovered the body of an unidentified person. Later he was identified as one Gobinda Sarma (30). Three injured persons were also rescued. Among the three the condition of two is serious. They are Suresh Shah and Sudam Barman.

At first the injured were shifted to Alipurduar sub-divisional hospital. Later, the two were referred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.

In the blast the tin roofed shed of the camp of police constables deployed at the Barobisa MVI Check Post got damaged. From the documents recovered from the site of the blast it is believed that the dead man may be a lorry driver.

Locals alleged that four incidents of explosion were occurred at the area in the recent past and two men were killed but no foolproof measure was taken to stop such incidents. The intelligence personnel failed to collect information about the wrongdoers. The people of the locality have to suffer from fear but the authorities are doing nothing to safeguard their lives, a local resident alleged.

Soon after the incident a large contingent of security personnel rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. A senior police officer suspected that the activists of one or more militant outfits of Assam or north Bengal might be there behind the blast. Police is questioning locals to learn who brought the bicycle and the explosive at the place. An investigation was also initiated into the incident. All the police stations of the adjacent area in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar were alerted following the explosion. []
