ELECTION

GCDP threats fast-unto-death stir from Saturday

COOCH BEHAR, May 16: President of Greater Cooch Behar Democratic Party (GCDP) Mr Ashutosh Barma today announced that they may start fast-unto-death stir at the office premises of the district magistrate of Cooch Behar from tomorrow if the administration fail to arrest the culprits who attacked a GCDP activist on Thursday night.

Mr Barma alleged that a gang of CPI-M supporters armed with sharp weapons attacked GCDP supporters at Uttar Nababganj Balasi village of Dewanhat under Cooch Behar Kotowali police station at deep of the night. In that incident Md Ruhul Mian (25) received severe injury in his head. Md Ruhul is the local convenor of the GCDP. He was shifted to MJN Hospital in a serious condition. Demanding arrest of the persons involved with the crime the GCDP may start an indefinite hunger strike from tomorrow, Mr Barma said.

The GCDP president alleged that CPI-M goons had attacked one of their candidates, Md Abu Bakkar Haq Mian on 27 April. Proper complaint was lodged with the police but the police are yet to take any step against the offenders. A few days ago, in Langulia and Gosanimari in Dinhata too the GCDP supporters had to suffer from CPI-M attacks. Police did nothing in any of the incidents though those were reported with the authorities. "We cannot allow these things any more. Tomorrow, at 10 a.m. our supporters will start an indefinite hunger strike at the DM office premises", Mr Barma declared.

CPI-M sources however denied their involvement with the incidents. Police initiated a probe into the matter.

When contacted, the district magistrate of Cooch Behar Mr Rajesh Kumar Sinha said he would try to convince the GCDP leadership to reconsider their decision of hunger strike. Prior to the election this type of agitation may disturb the polling process. The DM hoped that the GCDP leadership might withdraw the plan and take part in the election process. []
