VC denied entry in university
COOCH BEHAR, Jan. 4: After a month's absence from the campus the vice-chancellor of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) Prof Mrinal Kanti Majumder arrived at the university gate today but agitating officers, employees, teachers and students resisted him from entering. A large contingent of policemen was also there to maintain peace. Amid 'go back' slogans the VC had to go back within a few minutes.
The situation of UBKV's Pundibari campus turned bad since 4 December. On that day the VC had relieved the registrar, Dr Parimal Chandra Sarkar by an order without showing any cause. Since then the members of University Officers' Association (UOA) and a section of teachers, employees and students were agitating demanding withdrawal of the order. On 24 December the joint secretary of agriculture department (education branch) Mr AK Samanta revoked the VC's order but the agitators began a fresh movement with 'VC go back' slogan.
Since 5 December the VC was functioning his official duty from his residence. Today he arrived to enter his office at the university campus but he had to go back. He told the reporters that he came to enter but failed due to demonstrations. On the otherhand the UOA's UBKV unit secretary Dr Mrigendra Ghosh said the VC is responsible for this situation. It is better for the VC to leave this university because he is no more acceptable to the officers, teachers, employees and students for his undemocratic activities, Dr Ghosh said. []
