Reminder to Das Munsi for resumption of air service

COOCH BEHAR, Jan. 7: Union Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs minister Mr Priya Ranjan Das Munsi had announced that the Cooch Behar airport would resume functioning after the election in Gujarat. In December, when he came to Cooch Behar to attend the closing ceremony of Cooch Behar Raas Mela, the chairman of Cooch Behar Municipality Mr Biren Kundu and the district magistrate Mr Rajesh Kumar Sinha appealed to him to take an initiative to make the long defunct airport alive as early as possible.

Amidst cheers, the Union minister had announced that the airport would start functioning after the election in Gujarat. Taking advantage of the presence of Mr Das Munsi an AICC member, Ms Sabita Roy and Congress-run civic body's chairman Mr Kundu proposed that the airport should be named after the last king of Cooch Behar royal dynasty – Maharaja Jagaddipendra Narayan. By this the citizens of Cooch Behar desire to pay respect to the last Maharaja, Mr Kundu opined. It may be mentioned that the princely state of Cooch Behar merged with India during the regime of Maharaja Jadaddipendra Narayan.

Mr Das Munsi had fuelled the proposal by saying that he will take up the matter with Union Civil Aviation minister Mr Praful Patel. He however mentioned that there are several formalities at state and Central levels in naming of airports and railway stations.

Today, the chairman of Cooch Behar Municipality faxed a letter to Mr Das Munsi reminding him of his promise of resuming of air service from Cooch Behar Airport after Gujarat polls as the polls already concluded. Mr Kundu said in the letter he also reiterated their proposal to name the airport after the name of Maharaja Jagaddipendra Narayan. He hoped that Mr Das Munsi would take necessary initiative to resume functioning of the airport shortly. []
