Nanda Gopal Bhattacharya

COOCH BEHAR, Dec. 11: A secretariat member of Communist Party of India and also state water resources development minister Mr Nanda Gopal Bhattacharya alleged that there is no parity between the utterings of chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee made in Delhi and Kolkata and also that of his party colleagues Mr Biman Bose and Mr Binay Konar. These trivial statements are fuelling deliberations among the front partners and others too. Such statements are causing cracks in the Left Front, he opined.

Mr Bhattacharya said the party of the chief minister takes no heed of his statement and he too does not care the directions of his party. Such things are unexpected and should be avoided. "We are unanimous over the chief minister's statement on Nandigram made at Delhi but not that of other CPI-M leaders", he said.

The veteran CPI leader believes in the need for strengthening the Left Front. As unity is required to strengthen the front the elder partner (CPI-M) should avoid making of such utterings that grow arguments and discontent among other partners, he said.

He made it clear that wrong steps were followed over Nandigram issue. The trouble was created after the land acquisition notice served by Haldia Development Authority. The role of Mr Lakshan Seth had fuelled the trouble there. An elected government in this state had failed to restore peace there for several months, he said. He however made Trinamul Congress, BJP and Maoists responsible for making the situation gloomy. Now, peace is coming back to Nandigram and the CPI-M should have to take decision on the role of their leader, Mr Seth, he opined.

Mr Bhattacharya came here to attend the two-day twentieth Cooch Behar district conference of CPI that concluded today.

Referring the Forward Bloc's decision to go alone in the ensuing three-tier panchayat elections, the CPI leader said he does not know why the FB leadership took such a decision. He would talk with FB leadership at Kolkata over the issue. "I shall try to convince them about the Left Front unity keeping in mind the necessity of unity considering the National perspective". The CPI-M should come out to keep the front constituent parties united, he opined.

Replying a question over the allegation of taking bribe by a CPI legislator Mohammad Illias, the veteran CPI leader said they had viewed the video footage and reached to an opinion that the entire matter is an act of conspiracy and concocted one. The Speaker already constituted an inquiry committee over the allegation. "We advised him to file two cases at Kanthi and Bankshal courts", Mr Bhattacharya said. []
