Other kind of achievers

COOCH BEHAR, June 3: When Sunity Academy in Cooch Behar is celebrating the success of Ushashi Bhaumik for her outstanding achievement in the Madhyamik examination there are others too for whom Cooch Behar can feel proud. There are four such achievers who are not even able to see their marksheets.

Rinki Chakraborty, Shipra Mallik, Rabin Karmakar and Sumit Das did well in the Madhyamik examination this year. Among these four poor blind boys and girls Rabin Karmakar secured star marks with letters in six subjects.

Rabin’s father is an agricultural labourer. They are residents of Changmari tea estate area in Jalpaiguri district. His mother plucks tealeaves in that tea garden and that is the mean of their livelihood. He is a residential student of a blind school in Cooch Behar. Like him Sumit Das is also a student in that school. Sumit came from Gorubhas village of Chakchaka area. They appeared from Cooch Behar Town High School in the Madhyamik examination this year. Rabin secured 717 marks and Sumit bagged 592 marks. Rabin hoped that he might do similar good result in the Higher Secondary examination too.

Rinki Chakraborty and Shipra Mallik appeared from Sister Nivedita Girls’ High School of Nilkuthi in Cooch Behar. Rinki’s father expired when she was preparing for the half-yearly examination in Class-X. Her mother runs the poor family by manufacturing and selling Murhi (baked dry rice). Her mother have no ability to read the marksheet printed in English and so when she came to the school to collect the marksheet she eagerly asked the headmistress whether her daughter passed or not. Rinki secured 573 marks and she dreams to be a teacher to spread light of education to the downtrodden people. Her blindness never was able to stop her going ahead. Now, she hopes of a better future.

Shipra Mallik got 577 marks. She is a resident of Jatrapur. Her father is a daily wage labourer. They had some farmland but that was grabbed by Torsa river. She had to continue her study by converting reading materials into Brail scripts. She hopes to become a nurse to serve the sick and suffering people.

The success of these four boys and girls made the authorities of the schools concerned happy. They hoped these four achievers might prove their worth if they get proper help and assistance to continue their higher studies. []
